There is much to discover in the Rhine Valley and the Westerwald
Even in ancient times, the Romans learnt to appreciate the countryside and scenery of this region. Various relics of the Roman times can be found at the Limes which has been an UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005.
Very close to our holiday apartment are the towns of Neuwied, Andernach and Koblenz, the gateway to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the upper part of the middle Rhine Valley, alsofinding its ancient roots in this period.
There are various cultural and recreational opportunities to be found near our holiday apartment in the Kannenbäckerland.
The area around our holiday apartment is also an eldorado for hikers. Whether it may be the Rheinsteig®, the RheinBurgenWeg, the Westerwaldsteig or one of the various premium round trips like the Traumpfad Saynsteig – hiking enthusiasts will be spoilt for choice.
Kulturpark Sayn in Bendorf-Sayn
Although our holiday apartment is located on the quiet and idyllic edge of the cultural landscape of the Kannenbäckerland between the southern- and Rhine side of the Westerwald, there are numerous possibilities for leisure activities.
In only a few minutes by car from the village Caan, one can find the Kulturpark Sayn where one can find various places worth seeing and experiencing.
After crossing the Upper Germanic-Rhaetian Limes (UNESCO World Heritage since 2005), and then down the serpentine into the Sayn Valley, one can catch sight of the remains of the Count of Sayn's former ancestral castle and encounter the magnificent views of the valley landscape of the Neuwied basin.
Arriving in Sayn, a part of the town Bendorf, one can see the magical castle of Sayn where one will find the (municipal) tourist-information and the the Rhenish Ornamental Cast Iron Museum. Here more information material and tips on tourism offers of the region can be acquired.
In the castle gardens, directly opposite the castle Sayn, is the Butterfly Garden. Here tender tropical butterflies flutter freely between bananas, hibiscus and other tropical plants and enchant the visitors. Indian blue quails with only bumblebee-sized fledglings, tortoises, colourful tropical finches and the mysterious green iguana are further inhabitants in the Butterfly Garden of castle Sayn.
From here it is only a short distance on foot to the monument areal Sayner Hütte and the casting bay built in 1830. This gem is the worldwide first industrial warehouse with supporting structure prefabricated cast iron parts.
Further sights to be be found in the historical centre of Alt-Sayn are the Mill Museum “Heins Mühle” and the venerable Abbey Sayn built in 1202 with its late romanesque outdoor mural drawings, outstanding gravestones and the the wonderfully colourful cloister. Right behind the abbey, the adventurous will find some action and adrenaline on the ropes course Sayn.
